Take the pledge. Get the badge.

This is the sixth pillar of Restore the First’s work. It is not a subscription, not a credential, not a filter. It is a public commitment to a small set of principles that make Fifth Estate publishing worth trusting, a badge you can use anywhere to signal you have taken it, and an opt-in listing in our featured directory so readers can find you. Free to join. Free to leave. Correctable in public. Revocable in public. Read the pledge below; if it fits how you already work, sign it.

The pledge, in five lines.

First-person. I publish under my own name, or under a pseudonym whose identity I have disclosed to Restore the First’s counsel, so that a legal person is accountable for my work.
Verify. Before I publish a factual claim I have not personally witnessed, I check it against a primary source. If I cannot verify it, I say so, or I do not publish it.
Cite. When I use another writer’s reporting, I say so and I link to it. When I use a document, I link to the document, not to my paraphrase of it.
Correct. When I get something wrong, I correct it in the same channel I published it in, at the same or greater prominence, and I say what I corrected. I do not silently delete.
Protect. When someone speaks to me on the record, they are on the record. When they speak to me on background, they are on background. When they speak to me confidentially, I would rather face contempt than name them without their permission.

That is the pledge. It is short on purpose. If it describes how you already work, sign it; if it doesn’t, do not sign it and please do not represent that you have. We remove listings publicly and cite the reason.

How to sign

Three ways in.

During this launch phase, we are handling pledges by email so a human on this coalition’s side reads every one. Later this week we will publish a signed-page form with public listing and badge issuance. For now:

Send a one-paragraph email. To pledge@restorethe1st.com, with your name, the URL where you publish (Substack, personal site, YouTube, podcast, X account, hospital newsletter, scientific journal you edit), and the single sentence: “I have read the pledge and I sign it.”

Attach or link one piece that you consider representative of your work. We do not vet claims; we vet method. One piece is enough to see if you already work the way the pledge describes.

Wait for the badge and the listing. Within a working week, we send back a small red wax-seal SVG badge you can use anywhere, and a URL where your listing appears in the featured directory. If we don’t add you, we tell you why in public terms so you can correct or appeal.

Structural

Coalition, not credential.

Standing to co-sign coalition briefs and open letters on First Amendment and jawboning cases, as one of the Fifth Estate signatories named in the letter.
An invitation to our closed writers’ channel, where signatories share leads, drafts, sourcing questions, and mutual defense against coordinated defamation campaigns.
Access to a shared legal-defense fund for signatories facing frivolous suits designed to silence Fifth Estate reporting; funded by the coalition, not by any signatory’s employer.
A commitment from the coalition: if you are named in a coordinated deplatforming or defamation campaign, we will publish a defense in the same channel and at the same prominence as the attack, and we will make it easy for other signatories to co-sign.

The honest disclaimers

Not editorial control. Signing the pledge does not give Restore the First any editorial control over your work, and taking the pledge does not obligate the coalition to defend or endorse any specific claim you publish. We defend the method, not the claim.

Removals are public. If a signatory’s listing is removed, the reason will be published on this page and cited in the removed listing’s slot. We do not silently delist.

Not exclusive. The Fifth Estate is not limited to this coalition’s pledge. Many writers who match the definition will never sign it, and that is fine; the pledge is one instrument, not the only one.

The badge is for the pledge, not for the coalition. Using the badge does not represent membership in Restore the First; it represents having taken this specific pledge, exactly as written above.
